Course Assignment 2: Brodie's Books

Strategic Design; Brand Identity
Project Overview
Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean.

A big part of this assignment was to analyse the brief and read between the lines and not go for designs that are the obvious. The products we needed to deliver was a primary logo, secondary logo with the tagline "Rare Books & Coffee Brews", van design, bicycle design, gift packaging concept and coffee packaging concept. The research part of this project was crucial so we would come up with a unique brand identity for this brand. The brand in question is a company called "Brodie's Books". They had an online store where they sold rare collectable books, but now they've bought an old pub in Edinburgh and wants to renovate it so it becomes a combination of a bookshop and a coffee bar.

The brand values second hand, vintage items and culture, so that has been taken in consideration when designing their logo/brand identity. The logo I made has an icon that has two apostrophes together forming a coffee bean. I chose the apostrophe symbol because it symbolises communication, quotes and text from books. But the symbol itself also resembles a bagpipe, which is a cultural item for Scotland.

When choosing the colors I went deep into the research of it. The brand is inspired by the fictional character Jean Brodie. Her story was set during the 1930s so I found inspiration from the colors that were popular in that time but also what could work in a modern setting. I ended up going for a dark blue/purple color, mint green and orange as the main three colors.
